The UDAC is situated on Stephenson Street, in London's Canning Town and is where most of the 70,000 Games Makers, plus the paid staff collect their uniform. It turned out to be a huge warehouse, in the middle of a particularly ugly industrial estate, but conveniently it was right next to the Star Lane DLR station, so there was no chance of getting lost.

As always, everything was extremely well organised. First step was to check in, which as you can see below, required very little waiting even though it was a Saturday afternoon.
Checking in |
Waiting for the shoes |
Then it was time to be fitted for the shoes..
Shoe Fitting |
After the shoes, we were shown to a different area to try on the shirt, trousers and jacket. There were no mirrors in the changing rooms, unfortunately, but I guess this was deliberate to ensure that people are as quick as possible when trying things on and don't spend time admiring themselves in their Olympic finery! All of the sizes are noted down for you on a form, which you then take to the distribution area...
Uniform distribution area |
It's here that you realise how much kit you are being given: shoes, two pairs of trousers, two shirts, a jacket, socks, a bag, a water bottle, an umbrella, a special Games Maker Swatch watch and a notebook. All of this is packed into a big black bag, which is completely full by the time you move on to the checkout area...
Checking out |
Here everything is taken out and compared against your "shopping list" to make sure that there haven't been any mistakes. It's also scanned at the till (I guess for stock control) before it's all packed up again for you and you're sent on your way, stopping briefly to collect your Games Maker Oyster card on the way.
From check-in to check-out, the whole process took no more than 1 1/2 hours. As I've mentioned before, I've really been impressed by how well organised everything has been so far and I hope this bodes well for the Games themselves.
What a brilliant day!
seems good, but is the bag suitable as regards size and strength to take as hand luggage on an aircraft.
ReplyDeleteMany of us come from beyond the home counties and are flying down for the day to collect this gear
It's fairly big, but I think it's probably within hand luggage limits. It's a bit like one of those reusable shopping bags and made out of nylon, so it should be strong enough to get everything home. There's a fastener on the top, but it doesn't zip up completely, so you'll want to keep it upright on the flight home and not shake it around too much. Hope this helps!
ReplyDeletei think you should not be a) posting the location of the UDAC or b) posting pictures of the inside of the UDAC without asking permission from LOCOG.
ReplyDeleteHi Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteWow, why do you think this? The location of the UDAC is freely available on london2012.com and, as you can see from all the flags outside, they're not trying to keep it a secret. As for the pictures inside, I've seen plenty on news sites, so I really don't think I've done anything wrong. There were no notices not to take photos there and I certainly didn't take them covertly.
At my venue training tomorrow, we've been asked not to take photos inside in the venue itself, and I will certainly respect that. My aim with this blog to help convey the excitement of being a Games Maker and to help promote the Games, not to break any rules.

Tim,
ReplyDeleteA great reply above to the other anonymous poster. I think this blog is great, and I am glad I know what to expect when I go to UDAC in 2 weeks time.
Happy Games!

Good on you!
I pick up my Games Maker kit on Saturday, maybe see you at the Paras!
Sadly, I can't do the Paras as I've taken all the time off from "real" work that I can. I'm so excited for you - you've got it all to come and you're going to have the time of your life!

You're welcome - I hope your trip goes smoothly!
DeleteDoes anyone know the opening times for UDAC please? Thanks
ReplyDeletei worked at UDAC and hated the place, i have memories now of the olympics (all bad)
ReplyDeleteI'm really sorry to hear that. Whilst the majority of Games Makers seem to have had a fantastic experience, I know that some had assignments which were a bit miserable. What was it about working at UDAC that you didn't enjoy?
